The number of cases of people purchasing iPads from Wal-Mart, Best Buy and other retailers, only to get home and find out what is in the box is a fake replica, has mushroomed in the past six months.
Typically, it’s a mock-up piece of plastic with painted-on black dots for the port slots and an Apple logo on the cover.
Despite the ongoing fraud, many analysts say the fake iPads work almost as well as similar products from Apple’s competitors, and purchasers report the replicas are still a good way to strike up conversations with other strangers using Macs in coffee shops.
